Kaspersky Antivirus and Internet Security 2014 are security software from the popular Kaspersky Labs. Kaspersky offers security software solutions for personal computers, business computers and enterprise level companies. Kaspersky software is well known for it's fast performance while providing maximum security against the latest virus threats. The Kaspersky Antivirus 2014 is among the fastest antivirus software of 2014.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014 is a powerful antivirus engine which aims to keep your PC free of malware. The program supports multiple scan types. The Critical Areas Scan examines just the files that are loaded when Windows boots, for the best performance; a Full Scan checks everything; and the Vulnerability Scan reports on potential problems with your applications or Windows settings which could be exploited by attackers. Each of these can be launched manually, or scheduled to run whenever you like, and by default Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014 will also scan your PC whenever it's idle, so detecting threats more quickly while minimising any performance impact on your system.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014 has a lot of improvements over the previous version, Kaspersky 2013. One of them is flawless installation. As some of you might remember, Kaspersky 2013 had a bug that messed up the installation process if it detected any traces of previously installed security software. Thankfully, this issue got fixed in the 2014 edition.
The new layout showcases cloud services based on the Kaspersky Security Network (KSN). Clicking the prominent Cloud Protection button brings up a window that displays the number of good files whitelisted, dangerous files blacklisted, and files still under processing. It bears a strong resemblance to the Norton Insight Network window found in Norton AntiVirus ($39.99 direct, 4.5 stars), though the total number of objects tracked by Kaspersky is substantially greater.
The new File Advisor feature gives users a direct view into what KSN knows about a file. Invoked by right-clicking the file, it shows the file's reputation and the number of Kaspersky-equipped computers where this file has been found. An expanded view also shows when the file was first sighted and details about its worldwide prevalence, among other details.
Kaspersky's URL Advisor browser plug-in has gained new flexibility. You can now set it to mark up out-of-domain links on all Web pages, not just search results. In addition, hovering the mouse over the red or green icon brings up a window that shows how Kaspersky has categorized the site.
This popup window also has a link for additional information. I expected that link to open a page of detailed information about the specific site in question, the kind you get from Norton Safe Web. Alas, it just brings up a description of the Kaspersky Security Network.
Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 (KIS) shares the same detection engine as its less feature-laden sibling, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014 (KAV), so both are discussed here.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus protects computers from several angles, effectively detecting, preventing and removing all forms of malware. The antivirus software is equipped to protect systems from traditional viruses. It also has advanced technology to protect from unknown threats. Furthermore, there are a couple of tools and web-specific features that Kaspersky includes that are normally only found in more comprehensive internet security suites.
AV-Comparatives.org tests each antivirus program's ability to clean up malware on demand. They also run a separate test that deliberately uses outdated malware signatures, in effect testing the product's handling of unknown threats. Kaspersky scored ADVANCED+, the highest rating, in the latest runs of both tests. Avira also aced both tests.
Kaspersky 2014 doesn't focus on speedy scans as much as its competitors. For most of the scan's duration on a real-world computer, it promised to complete in less than 3 minutes, when in reality over three runs it took an average over of 8 minutes, 10 seconds. Meanwhile, the Full Scan tightened up and completed scanning in 1 hour, 32 minutes--that's about average for Full Scans.
CNET Labs' benchmarks bear out these findings. The in-lab scan time for KIS was 1,320 seconds, faster than last year's 1,750 seconds and yet still the slowest scan we've seen this year. KAV took 1,208 seconds, also faster than last year and one of the slower scans this year. Note that CNET Labs has changed test computer operating systems, from a 64-bit version of Windows 7 to Windows 7 64-bit running Service Pack 1, so while we can mention the differences between last year's results and this year's, they're not directly comparable.
Kaspersky's system performance was fine once the computer had warmed up. The boot-time impact was atrocious, with KIS slowing down boot by 21.3 seconds and KAV adding 24.3 seconds. Shutdown impact was better, with KIS adding 12 seconds and KAV adding 9.6 seconds. On MS Office, iTunes decoding, media multitasking tests, and Cinebench, the two suites were around average. However, as mentioned earlier in the review, Kaspersky felt light when used and it transitioned smoothly between its different features and when jumping to other programs.
Kaspersky Antivirus 2014 has the following system requirements -
- Windows XP Service Pack 2 /Vista /7 (both 32 bit and 64 bit)
- a minimum of 480 MB free hard drive space
- an internet connection
- a processor rated at 800Mhz or better for Windows XP / 1Ghz or above for Vista and 7
- 512 MB RAM for Windows XP users / I GB RAM for 32 bit Vista and 7 / 2 GB RAM for 64 bit Vista and 7 users
Additionally, the program will run on the majority of current line netbooks assuming they can match or exceed the following specs -
- Intel Atom processor 1.6 Ghz
- I GB or more RAM
- 160 GB Hard disk
- Windows XP home edition
- 10.1″ + screen size
- an Intel GMA950 video adaptor
Kaspersky Anti-Virus continues to provide users with a high level of protection that includes security tools not offered by many competitors. The 2014 version won't change the face of personal computer security, although this particular package of security options has attracted enough devotees to make it a best-selling program, both in and out of the security field.
Kaspersky Antivirus 2014 is a great program and I really like it. It looks good, works well and has many features that add immensely to it’s usefulness. At around $59 for one years protection for one PC I think it offers great value to anyone looking at a standalone antivirus solution.
Having said that, I would actually recommend that you look at Kaspersky Internet Security 2014 though. If you can stretch to an extra $20 then the additional features found in that program represent a better value in my opinion. Have a read of my review though as you may decide differently depending upon how you use your computer.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus delivers superb protection and security. As one of the best antivirus software applications, it is robust and integrates innovative technologies to defend against even the newest threats. It’s a great option for protection and peace of mind. Independent test lab results confirm that it is effective against malware. The hybrid protection approach identifies threats based on information streaming to Kaspersky Lab's Security Network cloud from the installed base of more than 300 million users, plus it uses heuristic technologies to detect malware based on behavior.
