Japanese is written with a combination of kanji borrowed from Chinese and two native syllabaries, hiragana and katakana, and is spoken by nearly the entire population of Japan. Its web is dense and largely self-contained, with few pages translated. Expect prefectural and city offices, national dailies, ryokan and onsen guides, rail timetables, anime studios, manga publishers and gadget stores.
